Why We Remember Why Daring Greatly Exists
The Remember the 8 campaign exists to ensure that the men whose lives were lost are never reduced to headlines, case numbers, or footnotes in history.
Abdulbasir Faizi was more than a name in an investigation. He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a valued member of his community. Like many others, he came to Canada seeking safety, dignity, and the chance to build a better future. What he deserved and did not receive was protection.
Abdulbasir’s story reflects a difficult and uncomfortable truth at the heart of Daring Greatly: when voices from marginalised communities are overlooked, silence becomes dangerous. Concerns were raised. Time passed. Opportunities to act were missed.
The Remember the 8 campaign is not about reliving tragedy it is about restoring identity. It is about acknowledging that these men lived full lives before they were taken, and that their absence left real, lasting pain for families, friends, and communities.
Daring Greatly was created with this responsibility at its core. The project does not seek to sensationalise loss, but to confront truth with care, dignity, and accountability. Every creative decision is guided by respect for those remembered and the communities affected.
Abdulbasir Faizi should be remembered for who he was not only for how his life ended.
Through Remember the 8, we honour his life and reaffirm a simple truth: remembrance is an act of justice.
